Foliar protection

Magnesium is an essential nutrient for plant development, involved in photosynthesis and the management of plant proteins. Nevertheless, plants can sometimes suffer from magnesium deficiencies, depending on the nature of the soil. At Terresis Agriculture, we develop targeted solutions to meet the specific requirements of crops, ensuring high-quality production, optimal yield and improved plant health.

Leaves: the link between magnesium and photosynthesis

Leaves, which are the powerhouses of plants, play a crucial role in their proper development. Like solar panels, they capture light thanks to chlorophyll, and convert it into chemical energy via a complex process: photosynthesis. The sugars produced in this way are then used by the plant as a source of energy.

What is the role of magnesium? Magnesium, the central element of chlorophyll, is essential for photosynthesis by allowing the circulation of sugars and amino acids from the leaves to the roots and storage organs. More broadly, the presence of magnesium is synonymous with vigour, productivity and resilience.

Magnesium deficiency

Magnesium deficiencies can result from several factors, such as extreme weather conditions (drought, heavy rainfall, etc.), a nutrient deficit in the soil or an excessive intake of antagonistic nutrients such as potassium or calcium, which limit magnesium absorption. These situations often lead to foliar deficiencies that alter the cellular structure of the natural defences, favouring the appearance of diseases such as downy mildew for nightshades (potatoes), powdery mildew for horticultural plants and stone fruits, cercosporiosis for bananas, septoria for cereals or blast for rice.

Magnesian forms with direct effect

Developed by Terresis Agriculture, some products provide concrete solutions, by acting directly on the fortification of plant cells, to deal with foliar stresses. For example, TIMFOLIUP® WP is recognized by the European Union as a basic substance for its antifungal activity, thus offering a serious alternative to the use of plant protection products. SUNFORTIS, on the other hand, is used to protect the leaves from sun burn, by forming a reflective barrier.

These formulations offer a double action: nutrition and protection. They are a perfect example of how a nutrient can become a strategic agronomic tool for foliar health.
