Desulphurization of ship fumes
In 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented new regulations to reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions: ships around the world are now required to use marine fuels with a sulfur content of 0.5% m/m (mass by mass). In Emission Control Areas (ECAs) where the legislation is even stricter, the limit is 0.10%.
To achieve these goals, the installation of exhaust gas treatment systems, also known as exhaust gas scrubbers (EGCS) or scrubbers, is an effective measure. This process removes sulfur from the exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere.
Environmentally friendly gas cleaning systems
To protect our planet from air pollution, purification systems are installed on board ships. They remove harmful elements and protect our environment from sulfur oxides by filtering and purifying exhaust gases via a washing liquid. Closed-loop scrubbers use fresh water to treat and remove solid particles before discharging a minimal amount of wastewater into the sea, while hybrid scrubbers use seawater and fresh water as cleaning agents.
In both cases, the addition of an alkaline agent is necessary to neutralize the acidic nature of the gases and remove all particles from the exhaust gases.
